The FordFrankfurt's name derives from Franconofurd — a shallow limestone crossing that gave Romans and Carolingians a strategic military and trade advantage. The river is the reason the city exists at this coordinate.
The Canalization
1880s: the river transformed into a heavy-duty industrial artery. The Alte Brücke (first mentioned 1222) served as the sole stone crossing for centuries — funnelling all European north-south trade through the city's central market.
Modern Shift
